Shared Earth
An exploration of tree roots
The shared earth concept adds an element of contrast to the light and airy symbolism which often dominates my work.
Torn and twisted narrow strips of fabric form tree roots. Undefined, tangled shapes with earthy qualities sitting alongside wings, moons, or various patterns and symbols.
Nestled among the roots are little snippets of decorative fabric. I have placed these as a means of illustrating ideas around ancient tree wisdom and underground communication networks. I am curious about how complex and sophisticated these systems might be. What secrets may they hold?
The name Vivid and Veiled I chose to convey contrast: detail next to negative space, or structure and order beside random arrangements. The twisting and turning organic nature of toot shapes is helping to balance the flow of these opposing elements.
I build layers with different fabrics, paper, stitch and print. Imitation gold flakes trapped between layers is a recent addition. I expect these may tarnish over time to merge with the rust dyed fabric. A perfect metaphor for the passage of time, the resilience of trees and the life forms they support.
