About
Artist's statement
An enduring curiosity of the unknown, or unseen fuels my imagination.
I use hand stitch techniques to create little environments. Narratives evolve to
evoke the natural world and magical tales. Ideas portrayed of discoveries
found on a forest floor, concealed within a walled garden, or sometimes
simply inspired by the scraps of fabric I have lying around.
For some time I have been using rust to dye fabric. The unpredictable results reveal soft greys. Pale neutrals, or rich earthy shades. Fragments of this fabric often form the base, stitched together to form a blank page. Temporary paper templates help to build a loose structure, before anything is committed. I allow ideas to flow by working on several pieces at a time.
After placing templates of simple dwellings, moons, birds, lanterns, or other recurring motifs , colours are selected. Brights or neutrals are chosen to compliment or contrast with the rusty shades.
Always there is some pattern, or texture. From the fabric itself, or rusty marks made during the dying process. Detailed areas of stitching sit alongside other embellishments, or more random elements and space.
