Mid April, but I’m still hugging a hot water bottle!
The sight of tiny jasmine buds, pink at first before turning to white…that always surprises me….are a beautiful sign of the sun’s returning warmth to this part of the world.
I’ve sketched a few on tracing paper to choose locations for them in my work. I like to be able to shift them around until they find a nice space that feels right. 🩷

Wishing a good start to the week for all🌿

A few posts back I assembled a few new ideas not sure which I would keep and which would be rejigged. These blue birds appeared, but I couldn’t make the tones work well. That has often, in the past been a reason for discarding works. I’m learning to take the bits I like and transport them into a new little world, where hopefully they can shine. Unpicking is frustrating, but it is also a brilliant way to learn.
No guarantees for this version yet, but it’s now looking a lot closer to my original intention.
Ironically, I made this reel, posted it and the music, which I thought felt so right for it didn’t appear. So I deleted and started again! So here’s to new beginnings. Can you relate?

A few posts back I assembled a few new ideas not sure which I would keep and which would be rejigged. These blue birds appeared, but I couldn’t make the tones work well. That has often, in the past been a reason for discarding works. I’m learning to take the bits I like and transport them into a new little world, where hopefully they can shine. Unpicking is frustrating, but it is also a brilliant way to learn.

Results from tea dyeing yesterday:
My post yesterday is cotton fabric (some undyed, some previously rust dyed) in a tea dye bath.
I’m not an expert in this subject, so it’s always experimental. I wanted some soft textural tones. I got that on the undyed cotton, as well as some interesting, moody marks mixing the rust with the tea.
Even though it’s not quite what I wanted I see potential for those marks, but it’s likely to take a while before I return to see what I can do with them.
Whatever happens I learnt a few things yesterday, experimenting is fun. I think the MOST fun part of creating. What do you think?

Old cotton sheets, silk ribbon, rust…. I want to add some soft tea tones to this cotton, randomly tied with ribbon I’m hoping for bits of rust colour and steaks of white to make an interesting textural result. Though the ribbon is providing a function, it will also be tie dyed.

Lovey spring freshness from this Morning!
I was trying to get some reasonable images of things l’ve been working on today. Trees and sunlight are always so much easier to capture…so here they are. I’m really not sure why photos of artwork go well some days, then awful the next…nice bright day as too. Well that’s my frustration for the day, quite minor really! Hope your day is mainly frustration free☀️

Shared Earth
This is an evolving project inspired by tree roots. I have written about it in a little more detail in earlier posts.
I aim to build up a body of work in this theme.

Replenishing some colours. A task I love. Always have been fascinated by colour. I think I know instinctively what I’m doing with it, but in truth it frequently surprises, and challenges me. It’s a challenge I love however, and I am continually learning to balance colour, and tone. I used to work with paper and wax, with methods that allowed for very easy repositioning. With my current work, adjustments, are certainly possible, but not always so straightforward.
Do you have a favourite colour? I personally find that a really hard question to answer.🌈

One of many works in progress, I’m working from home today, and prepared this yesterday to stitch all those little pieces down. It’s my meditative work, hope that might come through when it’s finished, there’s a rhythm starting to evolve with this that I quite like. There I’ve said! Hope I can live up to my prediction, if it never appears again, you know I hate it!

It finally feels warm here! For today at least who knows what tomorrow will bring?
This little post is in response to only showing details.
There are a number of reasons why I opt for detail, a lot…maybe too much.
Firstly often I just don’t like the photos, the details are sometimes better, but on a day with good light,like today they came out quite well.
Secondly, I suppose I’m a little reluctant to reveal them when I know changes are likely to happen.
And thirdly, one of my major ways of evolving work is nudging different patterns up against each other, I really like details and mixing up pattern. Making something that has become quite familiar feel a bit different.

Cherry blossom time💖
I was thinking about how snowy landscapes, vibrant colours of Summer and Autumn, or the rich contrasting shades of Winter festivities all provide such great photo opportunities. But I don’t think any season demands photos in quite the same way as Spring. The newness and regeneration of everything, so fleeting and then it’s gone. I say all that even though I firmly feel Summer is my favourite, but Spring is the promise of long summer days to come (hopefully, living in England, it’s always a bit hit and miss, but that just means the sun is even more cherished I think) I would love to hear about colours of your favourite season.

Just a little selection of something I’m trying out. I had the idea of connecting fabric pieces with ties or buttons maybe. Been trying out a paper version today. Not sure yet, but I think potential is there to really shift the way I’ve been working. I see it solving several problems. A few randoms today. I have an eclectic idea of what inspires my art. They all weave together and mean something to me. Words don’t always sum things up neatly. These dried chillies though have something about them that I can’t resist. Do I sound a bit crazy? Probably! I’ll try and explain. I’ve been collecting, and drying chillies on my sunny studio windowsill for a while. I love the texture of them when they dry. Recently I’ve been selecting ones that have a curious bendy shape. There’s something almost magical about them. Yes, now I know I sound slightly crazy.
They may, or may not directly influence artwork, time will tell. I just like them!

Always on the lookout for a fresh way of doing things. So when the metal part of a screw top bottle of wine came right off I kept it to try it out for some printing. I have to say I’m quite pleased with the result. The thinness of the metal makes a nice, very quick and easy to use tool.

Is it just me or do the weeks fly by faster once we are in March? I think that every year not just this one. Anyway hoping your weekend started well.
I was planning a reel of current work in progress, but it was somewhat lacking variety. So I’ve gone with a mix of recent work and work in progress of my Shared Earth project.
‘Shared Earth’ the title I have given to a theme I am exploring involving tree roots.

This idea is inspired by the interconnected underground mycelium systems. The concept of communication among trees. The life of a tree…for us unimaginable experience. I use the word ‘experience’ deliberately. Not knowing what it is to be another life form. what goes on that we cannot see?
I am currently exploring meandering roots and jasmine.

Moss always catches my attention, found here so green on a park bench recently. Pleased it had not been ‘cleaned’ away. Spirals also. They have no particular connection here, other than I like moss, and I like spirals. Inspiration is all around in little ways every day. Hope you can find a few things today that make you smile😊

When I exposed the reverse side of embroideries recently, views increased. I get appeal of random back stitches. But I think also maybe showing what’s not ‘meant to be seen’ is also meaningful. They do have two sides after all. I like mixing up patterns, and the backs are just another pattern I guess. What do you think?
